Travel Green in the Senja region

A destination that protects what makes it unique

The Senja Region is certified as a Sustainable Destination, a national quality label developed by Innovation Norway. The label is not a guarantee that the destination is fully sustainable, but it is proof that we work systematically and long‑term to develop tourism on nature’s, local communities’ and cultural heritage’s terms.

We were first certified in 2023 and are now working toward re‑certification for a new three‑year period. This means we must continuously document results and improvements within environment, local communities, cultural heritage and value creation.

For you as a visitor, this means you are exploring a destination committed to preserving what makes Senja special — its dramatic nature, vibrant communities and authentic coastal culture.

Nature sets the terms

The mountains, fjords, beaches and small communities form the foundation of the experiences you find here. That is why we work actively with visitor management, facilitation and information that make it easier to travel responsibly.

We want both today’s and tomorrow’s guests to experience the same sense of untouched nature, silence and genuine encounters with people and places.

How you can contribute as a visitor

Travel local – create local value

When you choose local accommodation, restaurants, guides and activity providers, you directly support jobs, settlement and thriving communities.

Your visit matters to small villages and family‑run businesses that create experiences all year round.

Take care of nature

Senja offers spectacular natural experiences, but the environment is also fragile.

  • Bring all waste back with you

  • Follow marked trails and recommended routes

  • Use designated rest and camping areas

  • Show respect for wildlife, grazing animals and local residents

Remember: you are a guest in nature.

Plan your trip well

Weather conditions in Northern Norway can change quickly.

Before heading out, we recommend that you:

  • Check the weather forecast

  • Familiarize yourself with local conditions

  • Consider your own experience and skills

  • Check avalanche warnings at Varsom.no for winter and mountain trips

Good planning ensures safer experiences for everyone.

Choose responsible operators

Many of the member businesses in Visit Senja Region work actively with environmental measures, local collaboration and sustainable development. Several are certified through recognized schemes such as Green Key and Eco-Lighthouse (Miljøfyrtårn).

By choosing these businesses, you support companies that take responsibility for nature, climate and local communities.

Why sustainability matters

Sustainability is about more than the environment. It is also about people, culture, jobs and quality of life.

We want Senja to be a great place to visit — and a great place to live. That is why we work to ensure that tourism creates local value, supports vibrant communities and protects the natural and cultural heritage that makes the region unique.

Through conscious choices as a traveler, you help ensure that Senja remains an attractive destination for generations to come.
