When summer arrives on Senja, the beaches come alive. Here you’ll find white sand, calm bays and crystal‑clear water framed by dramatic mountains. Whether you want to swim, relax, snorkel, paddle or simply enjoy the shoreline, Senja offers beach experiences that feel both wild and wonderfully peaceful.
Popular Beaches
Ersfjordstranda Recreation Area is the most visited and well‑known beach in the Senja Region. It is well‑facilitated and ideal for spending time with family and friends. The famous Golden Toilet is now joined by a new building with more toilets and improved facilities for visitors. Evening sun and the view of the Okshornan peaks make this a favourite spot for locals and travellers alike.
Bøvær Beach is also popular, but with more limited facilities. There is no public parking, only a summer toilet. Please show consideration for local residents. Bøvær is just four kilometres from Skaland, making it possible to park in Skaland and reach the beach on foot or by bike. Bicycle rental is available at Yttersia Base.
The beach on Færøya in Bergsfjorden can only be reached by sea, and is therefore mostly used by locals with their own boats, or by kayakers, paddlers or those arriving by boat transfer. An architect‑designed toilet is also found here. The surrounding archipelago is part of the protected marine area Bergsøyan Landscape Protection Area, which helps preserve its unique nature and wildlife.
Steinfjord Beach is growing in popularity, framed by steep mountains and offering beautiful views towards the iconic Okshornan peaks. There are a few benches, toilets and waste facilities available.
Ballesvika and Laukvika are two other beaches that are less known, and along the coast of South Senja you’ll find many small, hidden gems — including Skatvika and Tranøya.
On the mainland, Sørvika and Aglapsvika are the most iconic swimming spots.
Inland communities tend to swim in freshwater lakes, which often reach slightly higher temperatures than the open sea. Some lakes have small beaches or simple facilities.
Senja Camping and Urhjertet are located right by freshwater, where guests can enjoy a refreshing swim.
