Arctic Snorkeling for a healthier ocean
Guardians of the Kelp Forest - The Natural North
Join us beneath the surface and experience Senja’s Arctic kelp forest up close. This adventure combines snorkeling, learning and real marine restoration – a meaningful experience where you actively help protect life in the ocean.
Discover one of Senja’s newest and most meaningful nature activities. Guardians of the Kelp Forest takes you beneath the surface of Northern Norway’s coastal waters, where you explore the Arctic seabed while directly contributing to local conservation efforts.
Developed in collaboration with Rissa Citizen Science, Senja Municipality and Ocean Green, this unique snorkeling experience blends adventure, learning and hands‑on environmental restoration. Together, these partners work to protect and rebuild Senja’s underwater ecosystems through citizen science and community engagement.
The experience begins in the village of Stonglandseidet, where you meet your guide for an introduction to Senja’s coastal culture, marine life and the challenges facing Arctic kelp forests. After a safety briefing and equipment fitting, the group heads to a nearby snorkeling site to explore underwater habitats that support a rich diversity of marine species.
This is real conservation in action. Under the guidance of experienced local instructors, participants help remove sea urchins that threaten the kelp forest. Together, we collect valuable data and contribute to practical restoration work that supports ongoing research and sustainable ecosystem management. The goal is to return the area to its natural state before sea urchin populations exploded.
No previous snorkeling experience is required. The activity is adapted to the comfort and experience level of each group, making it suitable for curious beginners as well as seasoned ocean enthusiasts.
